Community Involvement
HAI Group serves more than 1,000 public housing authorities
across the country. Housing Authority Insurance, one of its
related companies, lobbies on behalf of housing
authorities on precedent-setting laws that could directly affect
their ability to provide safe housing for residents. HAI is
committed to being at the forefront of such efforts.
Locally, HAI Group staff serves member housing
authority residents through its holiday program, which was
initiated by the staff. All money raised by the staff
is through activities supported by HAI Group management. This is an
annual event that has taken place for the last 16 years.
Regionally, HAI Group staff members serve on Boards and Committees of
regional associations and often provide free training sessions
at their conferences.
In 2008, $30,000 was distributed to residents in the form of scholarships. This program began in
2002 at the suggestion of staff members who were moved by
presentations made at scholarship luncheons at national
conferences. HAI Group management funds the scholarship awards, which are now
an annual event. It is
hoped these public housing residents will serve as role models in their community.
In 2009, a dozen $2,500 scholarships will be awarded.
HAI Group rewards personal safety actions by children in public
housing through a poster contest it sponsors. Prize money is distributed
annually to PHAs across the country. Hopefully an awareness level is raised in children to
allow them to avoid or prevent future mishaps.
As a company heavily dependent on technology, we upgrade our
computers constantly. Staff felt older computers could be
useful to public housing authorities in their resident
opportunities programs. We donate old computers
to PHAs for use
in their resident computer labs. In 2008, 12 desktop computers
were donated to the Galveston Housing Authority for residents to
communicate with families after Hurricane Ike.
HAI Group was innovative in working to assist housing
authorities in meeting community service requirements through
its unique implementation of training programs that track
training hours and provide necessary documentation for client
files at no additional cost to PHAs or residents.
HAI Group staff spent more than 100 hours collectively providing
free one-on-one training on insurance and risk management issues
at PHA sites and/or conferences.
HAI Group hosts the Web sites of Minnesota and NCRC NAHRO at no
cost to the groups to support communication within the industry.

HAI Group staff sponsor numerous fundraising events for American
Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Employees donate time and money
in the spring and summer, then spend up to 24 hours walking the
track at Cheshire High School (CT) for the event (even when it
rains!). If you're interested in contributing to this year's
team, please click on the logo to visit our
HAI Hopes team site.
In an effort to help victims recover from the damaging effects
of Hurricane Katrina, Housing Authority Insurance Group and its
employees raised more than $7,000 for the American Red Cross
Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund.
With a company donation of $5,000 and an additional $2,260 from
staff, the HAI Group family came together to help provide funds
to those desperately in need of food, water, and supplies.
