Fire Prevention Week 2008

Your home should be a safe haven. But do you regularly check for home fire hazards? If not, there is the potential for danger. Fire departments responded to nearly 400,000 home fires in 2006. That’s why the theme of Fire Prevention Week 2008 is “It’s Fire Prevention Week: Prevent Home Fires!" From October 5-11, 2008, fire safety advocates will spread the word to their communities that, with a little extra caution, preventing the leading causes of home fires – cooking, heating, electrical and smoking-materials – is within their power.

Housing Authority Insurance Group is holding its annual National Fire Prevention Week Poster Contest. The deadline to enter the contest is November 14, 2008. Click here for complete information on the contest, including the registration form.

HAI Group and the NFPA would like to remind everyone to exercise fire prevention safety procedures every week of the year. Click here for more information on Fire Prevention Week and for fire safety facts and tips.

Most Improved

Each year members are recognized for being most improved in their claims history. This award is based on claim and cost per claim reduction over a three-year period. Three size categories include: 1. 499 conventional units and under; 2. 500 to 2,499 conventional units; and 3. 2,500 or more conventional units. For each category, members are evaluated for the most recent full three calendar years excluding the most recent full one. For example, for the 2006 awards, (awarded in September 2006) the three calendar years under evaluation would be 2002, 2003, and 2004. This excludes 2006, which is a partial year, and 2005, which is the most recent full calendar year. To be eligible, members must show a decline in frequency (defined as number of claims per 1,000 units) each year for three years. In addition, members must show a decline in the cost per claim on a paid basis per year. These two parameters are the first “cut” for the membership of HARRG. Under consideration are general liability claims only (BIGL, PIGL, PDGL), and paid and closed claims only. Members making the first cut in the claim reductions are then evaluated against one another for greatest percentage change over a three-year period in the reduction of claims per 1,000 units. Any tie in individual size categories is settled using the three-year cost per claim reduction percentages with the highest overall reduction receiving the award. Members are ranked according to performance. This report will be run annually in April. The result is nine awards for Most Improved. Three awards per category are awarded as follows: Most Improved; First Runner-up; and Second Runner-up.

Low Loss

The Risk Control Committee recognizes consistent positive PHA performance by acknowledging those agencies with low loss ratios. The criteria used to determine recipients of this award include:

General Liability Program (HARRG) Criteria

  • Average loss ratio below 50%
  • Data for evaluation based on three policy years of claims (average of the three years is used)
  • The three years would be the most recent not including the current year. For example, the 2006 awards in September would average the loss ratios for policy years 2002, 2003, and 2004
  • Loss ratio based on losses from the first dollar;
  • Claims considered would be open and closed
  • Under consideration are general liability claims only (BIGL, PIGL, PDGL)
  • Coverage must be current and must have been continuous during the time period being evaluated
  • Determination made annually in April
  • Annual recognition at September Annual Meetings; and
  • Certificate to recognize recipients
