Award Winners
HARRI Winner:
Kinston Housing Authority,
NC: “RED (Resident Education Daily) Light Program”In an effort to
prevent house fires and other accidents while cooking, cleaning, and
conducting activities of daily living, we are educating our residents
everyday. Kinston Housing Authority has installed televisions with
DVD/VCRs in the lobby of our four management offices. By having
these communication tools inside the lobbies, residents will receive
helpful tips for safety inside and outside their homes. Our
residents visit the offices regularly to pay rent, report problems,
report changes, and renew their leases. This information will
be provided daily.
Best Practices Winner:
Milwaukee Housing Authority, WI: “Sprinkler Stop Valve: Minimizing
the Potential for Water Losses”
The sprinkler stop valve is a tool that is used to shut off the
flow of water of a sprinkler head after it has been activated.
Sometimes a sprinkler head is accidentally activated due to causes
other than fire.
First Runner Up:
Stillwater Housing Authority, OK: “Smokey Detector”
A flyer is placed in all re-exam packets and initial interviews for
both public housing and Section 8. Flyers for 800 families and
seniors explained in depth during interviews (one on one). They may also
be used in group activities.
Second Runner Up:
Danbury Housing Authority, CT: “Public Safety Initiative”
Established a Public Safety Program to reduce crime and the fear
of crime within the City of Danbury's public housing properties and
empower residents to take a role in this effort.
