Helping Young Residents Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety

We celebrated National Fire Prevention Week 2021 (October 3-9) by hosting our annual Fire Safety Poster Content for HAI Group member housing organizations on this year’s theme—Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.

The goal of this year’s contest was to make sure young residents understand the sounds of carbon monoxide and smoke alarms and know how to respond. Here are some essential tips we shared:

If an alarm sounds a continuous set of three loud beeps—beep, beep, beep—it means smoke or fire. Get out, call 9-1-1, and stay out.
A single chirp from an alarm every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed.
If chirping continues after an alarm battery has been replaced, that alarm is at the end of its life and must be replaced immediately.
All alarms must be replaced every ten years.
Make sure alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.

Drawing conclusions about fire safety

We encouraged young residents to ask about different alarm sounds and their emergency exit strategy, then create a poster about their takeaways.

Each participating housing organization held a contest with the option to offer monetary prizes in three age groups. HAI Group reimbursed up to $300 in prize money to each participating organization. Check out some of the winning posters from various housing organizations below!
